1.Lemon juice or lemon essential oil.

Lemon juice has antibacterial properties which help to kill pathogens and remove germs. It can preserve and maintain the freshness of produce by preventing them from being discolored easily.

Lemon also has a strong smell that can keep fleas, ants and other insects away from your produce.


Water acts as a natural neutralizer. It helps to reduce the acidity of both vinegar and lemon.

How to make and use this DIY Fruit and Veggie Wash.

1 cup distilled vinegar 

One cup lemon juice or 15 drops lemon essential Oil

1 cup of water.


Place all the above ingredients in a spray bottle and shake well to combine.

How to use this spray.

Shake this fruit and veggie wash then spray it on the fruits and vegetables. Thereafter, leave it to sit for 12-15 minutes then rinse the produce in clean running water.

Dry the fruits or vegetables with a dry paper towel or cloth towel to remove water on their surface and store.

You can also soak your vegetables and fruits in the solution for about 12-15 minutes. Rinse in clean running water and then dry. Store appropriately.

Baking soda and water homemade produce wash

Baking soda

This typical white powder is alkaline. This is the reason why it is mostly used in most homemade deodorizing and cleaning ingredients.

Baking soda is excellent for cleaning and removing stains, thus it can easily dissolve the wax coating, germs, dirt, and pesticides from fruits and vegetables.

2 Tsp baking soda

1 cup of clean water.


1. Mix baking soda and water well in a large bowl.

2. Soak your bought fruits and vegetables in the solution for 10-15 minutes then rinse in clean running water. Dry with a paper towel and store or eat.

Hydrogen Peroxide and water fruit and veggie wash.

Hydrogen peroxide

This colorless liquid has antibacterial and antiseptic properties which are the reasons why it is used to disinfect surfaces. It can be used to kill bacteria and remove dirt from produce too.

Hydrogen peroxide is a bleaching agent hence I like using it to remove wax from fruits and vegetables.

1 cup Hydrogen peroxide

1 cup of clean Water.

How to make and use it

Put the ingredients mentioned above in a large bowl and mix well.

Use the mixture to soak your fruits and vegetables for about 10-15 minutes. Rinse in clean water and store.

Turmeric and water produce wash.

Turmeric has antiseptic and antimicrobial properties which make it excellent for killing bacteria.


1 tsp turmeric powder

4 cups of cold water

How to make and use this veggie and fruit wash.

1. Mix the ingredients in a large bowl to combine well.

2. Soak your dirty fruits and vegetables in the solution for 10-15 minutes then rinse in clean water.

Note: In addition to using these veggie and fruit wash solutions, make sure to use a soft scrubbing brush to clean your fruits and veggies. The scrubbing helps to remove hidden germs and the wax that usually is applied to produce to make them shine.

Please, do not eat any store-bought produce before washing to reduce the chances of you becoming ill.

    • Hi Anna, you don’t have to refrigerate the vinegar, lemon water. I make mine each time I want to clean my fruits. You can try that if you are busy to make a new wash each time it will still work but keep it for the shortest time if possible. I hope that helps.
