In addition to spreading it on my toast, I add it to my smoothies and soups. We use it a lot, it is one of our household staples and we cannot live without it. With only one ingredient-Raw almond nuts you can make this butter.

Why is almond butter good for you?

Almonds are a good source of minerals such as magnesium, iron, antioxidants, and vitamin E compared to peanuts. It contains high contents of healthy monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, which helps to lower cholesterol and reduce weight.

Additionally, almonds are a good source of plant protein. They contain a complete source of essential amino acids needed by the body.

Adding almond butter to your diet can ignite your energy and improve satiety. Therefore eat it with your breakfast or add it to your smoothies and snacks.

Why I make homemade almond butter.

I used to buy almond butter, but the organic brand we often bought was a little expensive. Sometimes we would buy other non-organic brands when our budget was tight.

But I discovered that the non-organic brands contain unhealthy high fructose corn syrup, palm oil, and other ingredients that we are trying to avoid.

I decided to try making a homemade version and loved it. I now make it quite often and I have found homemade almond butter to be simple, healthier, and cheaper than the store brands.

With a powerful blender or food processor, I only spend a few minutes to make this smooth, healthy butter.

Making homemade butter is inexpensive and easy. If you want to save more buy whole raw unbleached almonds in bulk. Then you can decide to use them raw or when roasted to make your homemade butter.  I buy mine at Costco at only $13 and make several jars.

What ingredients do you need to make almond butter?

You will only need one ingredient-almonds to make your butter. Spices, Salt, and any preferred sweetener are optional.

What equipment do I need to make the butter?

You need a powerful food processor or blender which has the capacity to hold both dry and wet foods. For the food processor choose one of at least a 700-watt motor and for a blender, a Vitamix can work well.

Should I add oil to my homemade butter?

You don’t have to add any extra oil to make the butter. Almonds are calorie-dense and contain their own natural healthy fats/oil. Adding more oil only makes them too oily, unhealthy, and unnatural in my opinion.

Blending Almond nuts helps to release the natural oil in the nuts hence there is no need to add any oil. Though, It may take some time to produce creamy oil-free butter depending on the strength and power of your blender.

What can I cook with or use with Homemade almond butter?

You can use almond butter as a spread on your breakfast toast, add it to your curry dishes, use it to make healthy energy bars, make healthy dressing for your salads, make sauces or add it to your smoothies.

Do I need to roast the nuts or use them raw?

You can use roasted or raw almond nuts to make the butter, it all depends on your preference.

Roasting your nuts before blending can add some unique flavor, texture, taste, and smell to your butter. Roasting almond nuts also makes it easier for some people to digest the butter. There are claims that roasted almond butter is slightly dense in fat and calories.

Raw nuts contain high amounts of healthy monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats whose chemical bonds have not been destroyed or oxidized by heat.

You can experiment with both and choose one that suits you best.

Can I add spices, flavorings, or sweeteners to my Almond butter?

Yes, absolutely. You can spice up or sweeten your almond butter. You can add spices such as cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, or cloves.

Alternatively, you can add honey, syrup, or any preferred sweetener or flavorings such as vanilla in moderation to your butter.

For excellent results, add the spices or sweeteners once the nuts turn into a thick creamy butter and combine well.

How to make homemade almond butter.

Use a high-speed blender like Vitamix or a food processor to make the butter. Add raw unbleached almonds in it and pulse until smooth then transfer to a clean glass jar and store in the refrigerator to increase its shelf life.

Can I use another nut substitute for Almonds?

Yes, you can substitute almond nuts with other nuts such as peanuts, hazelnut, pecans, or cashew nuts to make butter.

Raw Almond butter recipe

Healthy smooth, satisfying and delicious homemade almond butter you will spend very little to make.


  • 1 cup raw unbleached almonds
  • ½ tsp sea salt (optional)
  • 2 Tbsp raw organic agave (optional)


  1. Place raw unbleached almonds in a good food processor or strong blender preferably a Vitamix blender. If using a food processor start by chopping the almond and pulsing them coarsely before pureeing them. However, if using a blender start blending on low speed until the almonds are coarsely chopped or powdery. Increase the speed gradually until you get a smooth paste. Blend more to your preferred consistency.
  2. Add sea salt and agave or any preferred sweetener if you like and blend a little more to combine the ingredients. Transfer the batter from the food processor or blender to a clean airtight glass container and store in the refrigerator.


Keep this homemade almond butter refregirated to prevent it from hardening or separating.
